i heart alexander girard!

Dwell from December 2005 featured an amazing retrospective on Alexander Girard - a brilliant designer of textiles, furniture and more for Herman Miller in the 1950's through 1970's. Girard made even the most mundane household items come alive with silly creativity and vibrant beauty.

I immediately fell in love with his pop art color palette and his abstracted images. His aesthetic - "modern folk" - draws on folk imagery from around the world.

I am completely obsessed with Girard's work! He was a designer's designer - able to walk the fine line between pure art for art's sake and the necessity of practicality, to create while balanced on the bar between the whimsical and the ordinary.

Girard had an infinite number of pet projects, from creating textiles for Herman Miller interiors to creating dolls, toys and tree houses for the short lived Textiles and Objects shop in New York.

Oh how I adore him!
